For various reasons, I don't want to just pick a neurologist from a list or just take a recommendation from my regular physician. Once before, I needed hernia surgery and I did a lot of work to find the best surgeon for this in my area. I read Lance Armstrong's book and I was amazed by how much he went through before he settled on an oncologist (and it was easier for him than for most people because of his celebrity). Can you suggest any tricks for reliably identifying really good specialists without going through so much trouble, or (if the suggestion is reliable enough) even with a lot of trouble.

It really depends on what you need to see the neurologist for, or if you actullay need to see a neurosurgeon. My daughter's neurosurgeon seems to know a lot more than my husband's neurologist. Also, the why is important, because each physician has his own area of expertise. We're finding out that the neurosurgeons in Miami or Boston are much better suited for my daughter's condition than the Neurosurgeons in Atlanta becasue of her specific condition. Although if she had a different condition, Atlanta might be better.

Since I trust my family doctor with my life I would take any referral she gave (and I have). Plus I would contact that surgeon you trusted and ask for a referral.

Also you can call the local/state Medical Association and they will give you a list of three or four, all of whom should be good. You can actually look up on their medica site if the doctor has ever had a suit, etc. Then you google them and see what comes up.

Good physicians are frequently associated with university level teaching programs. They also do research and publish. Check out nearby large university hospitals and also ask friends and others for recommendations and other information.

If I have a medical doctor that I like... that I have confidence in.. I always ask HIM for a Urologist that is good... a dentist that is good.. and perhaps you could ask him for his advice

you don't, they find you - if you have a head problem good enough and enough cash they will fly to you, if you havent got the cash then you can't afford them anyway
