The amount of sleep that a human being needs is different for different people. Alot of factors are involved. More times than not, the average is 8 hours of sleep a day. If you more active, you may need upwards to ten. Younger children need more sleep as they are growing, and their bodies are changing. a child can sleep 12 hours a day and be healthy. Babies even more. As you get older you will find that you will eventually need sleep more. If you feel that you are not getting enough sleep, try taking a nap after work or halfway through your day. A power nap can be a great refresher.

I actually find that less if more. And, I seem to have to sleep in increments of odd hours: like 5, 7, 9 and I wake up refreshed. When I get 8 hours of sleep, I feel groggy. Our brains go through sleep cycles with the deepest sleep occurring for the first two hours of sleep. We also need REM (dream) sleep or we don't feel like we've had a good sleep. But to answer your question, the average amount of sleep for an adult is 5 - 9. And "coffee achievers" definitely get by on less! Sleep well. =)

The average I heard is 7.5 and the lowest is 0. Practically, most people are unable to function well with less than 4 hours.

for ALL OF YOU who said you want 8 hours of sleep, or that 8 hours is required..think of it this way...8 hours is practically 1/3 of one day...(24/3 = 8). Ok assuming you get your precious wish of getting sleep 8 HOURS PER DAY of everyday that you live in your life, do you realize that of your enitre lifetime....that 1/3 of it you were sleeping? Did you ever think of it that way? Draw a circle on a piece of paper and divide into three equal pieces...now shade 1 of the three pieces in and note that the other 2 pieces is where you really "live"...the other 1/3 was spent "re-charging"....what a waste!!!........
