I've heard this quip on many a movie, and I posed the question to my girlfriend (a teacher) as to how she would respond to this line with a witty yet non-defensive, non-confrontational remark.

Background: Ellison Mounts is believed to have been the illegitimate son of Harriet Hatfield, later married to Daniel Mounts, and Ellison Hatfield, who was killed by the three McCoy brothers in the election day fight. Ellison Mounts, commonly referred to as "slow-witted" and as a person with albinism, was hanged for his part in the New Year's Day attack on the McCoy cabin in 1888. The hanging occurred on Feb. 18, 1890, in Pikeville, Ky. Legend has it that his mother, Harriet Hatfield Mounts, died of a heart attack as she traveled on horseback over the mountains from West Virginia to visit her son on the day he was executed. In reality, she lived until about 1918, when she died in Bruno, Logan County, West Virginia.

Why not make it the same so the kids in the inner cities are getting the same teaching as the kids in the wealthy suburbs? I know there are funding differences but why not have the same textbooks for all the classes in the whole USA?
If we are afraid that this would leave an opening for government propaganda there is already so much in the textbooks that is wrong. Why not get the leading historians together to make one set of history textbooks for the whole USA?

I feel that teaching is one of the "higher calling" careers where the amount of work and sacrifice is greater than the pay. (Other such careers are social work, fire fighter and police etc.) It is the enjoyment of the work or the personal need to serve others that helps these heros keep on working.
I was thinking about how teachers should get paid more (average between 50,000 and 125,000) but then I thought about how paying more might encourage people who no longer have the "higher calling" to stay being teachers because they can't make that sort of money outside of teaching even though they no longer enjoy teaching.
Now if someone no longer enjoys teaching they can usually get another job paying roughly the same amount if not more. What do you think about this situation?

I feel very intimidated by the other parents and some of the staff at my sons grade school. He is in 2nd grade this year, and I was reading the flyer issuing an invitation to join the PTA for ten dollars a year. I don't think I would fit in with them... but I wonder if I could learn from the experience. I don't have much money, and am not eager to get caught up in drama or competative mingling. Should I chance being humiliated by my lacking social status? What do I have to offer the PTA?

Like i'll see people walk into her class from kinda far away and i'll see that she says hey and good morning, but she don't say it to me, and i'm her assistant. She's nice to me every other time. It would make my day if someone said that to me.
