I've heard this quip on many a movie, and I posed the question to my girlfriend (a teacher) as to how she would respond to this line with a witty yet non-defensive, non-confrontational remark.

I'm sorry for the clarity issue. To be clear, my question is
"What does she need to say as a comeback that is witty but not rude or defensive?"

Well, it's a good thing we can't or how would everyone else learn to do it.

Well, someone must need teachers because i'm getting paid to teach.

I prefer teaching to doing.

Yes, sometimes that happens. And that is usually not the best teacher. The best teacher would be able to both do and teach.

Since you're so good at doing, can you grade my students' papers this week?

Wanna switch jobs for a month?

Yeah, i end up getting 30 times as much done cuz i taught 30 people to do it.
(Or 1000 or however many students she has had.)

She could respond with...
" Hurry up and take over the world while you still know everything."
or
"I could have worked at Wal-Mart but I wanted weekends off."

any student that says that quote "Those who can't do teach" to a teacher needs to learn a few valuable life lesson, humor is the best antidote. She might want to create a lesson plan around the idea of that quote. By talking about what sort of jobs will be available in the future for the students of today, put the students into the frame of mind that inspires "real world" planning...
I hope I have given you somethings to think about. Some teachers really want to inspire kids to be their best...and your girl friend sounds like she is one of them...Good Luck

But to do is to teach. There for teaching is doing. To be a good teacher you must know and experience what you are going to teach. And if not how are we learning properly?Very good questions don't you think? Thanks for reviving my brain this morning. I was a little sleepy there for a while!!!

I've always liked this one - "Amazing how they come out so well then ..." It's not very witty, it's not very confrontational, but it does make you think.

To answer a former answer-for professors it is "Those who can not do teach, those who can not teach, teach teachers to teach".

"And those who can't teach...teach gym."

:) It'd be easier to be offended by it if it weren't actually true for some of my colleagues, lol.
