My 8 and 12 year old home educated children use Rosetta Stone for Spanish and they both are thriving in it. They have French programs as well...if my children can learn via a computer program...so can you :-) Here is a link from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Rosetta-Stone-French-Level-Personal/dp/B000077DD2 along with the reviews, probably a lot cheaper than hiring a teacher/tutor.

Not only do you learn to speak the language but also how to read and write the language. Speaking, hearing, writing and seeing are all covered in the Rosetta Stone courses.

Have you contacted the French or Canadian embassies? They must have an education officer who might be able to help.
