My son is 11 and in the 5th grade next year they will put him in junior high and I have been informed that he must take an elective class. He will also have to join the general population for P.E. They want him to take science, health and geography with the regular students until he "overloads" and then they will take him out and put him in special classes.

Right now my son is in Special Ed classes but in these classes are kids that have disapline problems and my son doesn't have those issues its just that he is developmentally disabled. His level is about that of a 1st grader on some things but lower on other things. He doesn't understand kids making fun of him he thinks they are being his friend.

I adopted him 3 years ago, and I clearly want whats best for him. I am not sure public school is the answer. Is there something else I can do that will help him learn in a safe and tease free enviornment? Help! I am worried!

I play the Trombone (the baritone during marching season) and a freshman in High School. I really enjoyed Marching Band this year and still do. The thing is that next year I will be taking Honor classes in addition to 2 AP courses as well. There is a huge stigma if you leave the band (ie everybody is gonna hate you forver if you quit, specially our band director, im not exagerating I am serious)

All my classes will be academic with almost no "fun" electives execpt for Band but anyone who has been in Band knows that it is one of the biggest time whoeres ever, at its peak during marching season you are at school/events every friday and saturday for almost three weeks.

Do you guys have any advice?

Our school system is catering more and more to the kids today than ever! Now, they are concerned that students are not getting the required "9" hours of sleep per night to perform their daily studies. On an average, a nation-wide study showed most school students are not getting to sleep until 11pm, causing fatigue during the day, and lack of concentration. Now, they are considering moving the school day to start an hour later. I find this totally rediculous. Kids today have the computer and internet to do their homework, there is even a section on Yahoo Answers specifically for homework help! They are having everything handed to them for their convenience, and are not learning the sense of time management, responsibility, or setting short-term goals for themselves. It starts at home, with parental guidance, discipline and supervision over schoolwork. It is then, school officials should enforce the progress of the student.
