Our school system is catering more and more to the kids today than ever! Now, they are concerned that students are not getting the required "9" hours of sleep per night to perform their daily studies. On an average, a nation-wide study showed most school students are not getting to sleep until 11pm, causing fatigue during the day, and lack of concentration. Now, they are considering moving the school day to start an hour later. I find this totally rediculous. Kids today have the computer and internet to do their homework, there is even a section on Yahoo Answers specifically for homework help! They are having everything handed to them for their convenience, and are not learning the sense of time management, responsibility, or setting short-term goals for themselves. It starts at home, with parental guidance, discipline and supervision over schoolwork. It is then, school officials should enforce the progress of the student.

Not only do the students have more time off from school than ever before: Christmas vacation, Mid-winter break, Spring break, holidays off, snow days off, etc. ....now this??? COMMON!

I'm a student. My mom gets frustrated with all the time we have off but listen, I go to school for almost 7 hrs a day and I don't get paid nor do I get to do something I like. Working people get vactaions and paid time off. School can be hard and just because we have technology doesn't mean a thing because you working people have technology to do your work to. Not all students are lazy.

Most adults don't have to be to work until 9am. What are adults really trying to teach kids by forcing them to be at school at 7:30 am? I think it's more of an issue that " *I* had to go to school that early, everyone else should have to suffer the same." There's no logic, and really, who the heck cares when they go to school? The point is to learn.

And then, on the other side, kids going to school so early, leave school early. Our public schoolers who start at 7:30 are done by 2:30, leaving nearly three hours before their guardians are home. That's a lot of time without mentorship.

As for homework, there is 50% more homework today then there was even ten years ago (The Case Against Homework, Bennett) It really doesn't matter how many resources there are if there is so much that it takes hours to do it.

I went to elementary school at 7:30/8AM and finished at 3:30 so yes they are shorter. My daughter went 7:40 to 2:40 but had less recess. Now she does Middle School at 8:40 and finhes at 2:53--I always think why the wierd times too- its all money though. We are in a small suburb district where they rotate the buses. Also a certain amount of time gives districts their maximum amount of money from the state and district. What my son had in High School, my Dad learned in College, so its a fast paced thing and a different world. I do agree but I get more concerned with the quality of moral disapline, order and education my child is getting. She will go on to a private Charter school for High School as she's been A's since Kindergarten (my son is in college) and can also get her 2 year college degree by the time she graduates- Parents are NOT doing their job and many of these children are going to have a rude awaking that will effect a whole generation and those after that- there are many good parents and kids but the morality, cussing, sex and lack of family is going to hurt this country badly. All a process of self control I think....

No, for school later. they'd only have to stay up making them be up later trying to get there work done, dinner, baths, etc. Besides that would make me later for work. I thought the recomendation was eight hours of sleep, I dont always get it, but if I want it Ive got to go to bed earlier! Disipline supervision and envolved parents are the key!
