We have a child who will be school age in a few years. We're wondering if we should stay in our neighborhood, where the public schools are pretty good, or move to a nearby area where they're excellent. The trouble is that those ratings are based on standardized tests, and the "excellent" area populated by the type of parents who value education and help their children do well. So I don't know if the school itself is any better, or if it's just the parents. If it's the parents, we can do that ourselves without moving anywhere. How can I evaluate the schools?

The results of a National Geographic Education Foundation survey of US adults between the ages of 18 and 24 were recently reported in Education Week (May 10, 2006; www.edweek.org). A few “interesting” findings…

60% of respondents could not identify Iraq on a map of the Middle East;
75% could not locate Indonesia, and most did not know that Indonesia is predominantly a Muslim nation;
Less than six months after Katrina, 33% could not locate Louisiana on a map;
65% could not locate the United Kingdom on a map
Only 25% identified Chinese Mandarin as the most widely spoken lang uage in the world.
And, most telling…

While 60% of respondents viewed use of computers and the Internet “absolutely necessary” in today’s world, only 33% thought it absolutely necessary to know where other countries are located.

My school has decided to have a beach theme this year. I have decided to make a bulletin board outside of my room using real kites, but I want to tie this board into the beach theme? I am also using Goofy in my room this year, so I would like to tie this in somehow. Any ideas on making my board look like Goofy is flying a kite on the beach? I also have to make room to display student work.
