This could be a matter of things and my classmates and I have done studies on this. Family problems (you know trouble at home), depression (this can make a person slow), going to bed late and not getting up on time, or child is having mental problems. My solution, talk to the parents, or keep the child after school and ask the child why he or she comes late, if the child cannot or will not answer, than just have he or she help you clean up the classroom if you have to do that after school. If I ever came late, which I did sometimes because of my brother and depression, my instructors made me stay after school and clean the classroom, they also had me work on my homework or they had me do something that I wanted to do, like drawing, singing, dancing, collages, or reading.

Well as a student i can tell you that im late everyday to school even though its only two blocks away. So what the teachers did was make three latenesses count as an abscence n then later that would change to detentions which lead to suspension, which i just couldnt deal with so i was alwayz ont time afterward. Or you can go the old fashioned way and call their parents. Or you can give them extra work. or for every minute their late thats how long they have to stay after school. (ive been through all of those)

one of the approaches is have a parent teacher student meeting and ask all the pertinent questions.Have a counselor give a candid talk to the student about being responsible in tardiness. Sometimes the student has a lack of motivation towards school. maybe the student is working late into the evening, maybe the home environment is a mess.so i would definitely start with the teacher , student, parent conference to get to the jist of the problem or problems.

In the two districts I have worked in, 3 unexcused tardies count as one unexcused absence. At 7 unexcused absences, parents are referred to the Juvenile Probation Office, for possible court action.

My high school always put them in ISS (in school suspension) for one day per five days they were late without an excuse, and every day they were late to ISS, another day of ISS was added on. Worked for the most part.

Deducting daily attendance points... so that it can have an effect on their grade

I recently had a teacher that gave points for attendance, so I knew that if I didn't show up, it would really hurt me.

Lock the classroom door and send them to the office. They are then marked absent from class and they will have to make it up.
