A topic can interesting to most people, but unless you care about it, you are not interested in it.

Interesting is an adjective. The book is interesting.
Interested is a state of being, which I guess is an adjective also. I am no longer interested in Gorbachev, but I was interested in him in the 1990s.

Also, you can be interested in a subject that is not interesting to most people.

interesting (adj. from present participle). Generally used in
Noun is interesting. I find Noun interesting.
interested (adj from past participle) Generally used with 'in'. I am interest in Noun.
Can be used in the phrase 'interested party' meaning someone who has a stake in the outcome. (The mother-of-the-bride is an interested party in planning the wedding. She is interested in baking, so she will create an interesting cake.)

the difference is the tense. interesting is something you find intrest in at the moment interested is something you have found interest in for some time

Interested is past tense, as in formerly interested in something.

Interesting is current; as in I find that topic interesting.

"Interested" is a verb.....I am interested in this job.

"Interesting" is an adjective....You have a very interesting job.
