Consumer Electronics - 22 September 2006

OK I'm new to DVR. I currently have Direct TV HD package and a Plasma TV. I don't even have a DVD player for the system yet. I do have a high-end PC (Dell) with Windows Media Player installed but I would need to purchase an additional component to use it as a recorder. I'm not against using the PC for this, just don't know how.

Anyway I want to start recording my TV, including some HD content. I need recommendations on how to go about doing it. I've never even looked into TiVo or standalone recording devices so I am looking for recommendations. My guess is I would record 10-15 hours of programming a week with at least half of that HD content.

I'm open on price but as usual I'd like a system that has a good cost/benefit ratio.

I am a current high school student. i have juevinale rheumatoid arthritis. i cannot write for longer than 5 minutes. i am in desperate need of a laptop computer with wireless capability to use on the school's server. if anyone has one they want to get rid off, give me a hollar. or if anyone knows where i can get a free one please email me. For example, if I have a 400mm focal length lens for a 35mm camera, can that translate to a magnification level? Most people that aren't familiar with optics or photography ask me what kind of lens I have.... when I tell them it's a 400mm they just kind of look back with a blank stare. I think they would understand better if I could them it was a 10x or 12x or something like that.

I'm a entry level independant photographer and I like talking to people about my work to generate possible intrest in doing work for them, and I just want to be able to put things in laymen's terms for them.

Okay, you know how on cordless phones, if you misplace the phone itself, there is a button on the base unit that causes the handset to make a noise to assist one in finding it.

They need to put something similar on all devices that are controlled by a remote, particularly if the remote can do some things that the device cannot. Like on a dvd player, sometimes you have to arrow thru menus to get to play. (kid lost dvd remote).

The existing weakness, as I see it is that, while cordless phones work off of a radio signal, remotes work by light, so if the remote were not in line of sight, pressing the panic button would do no good, and if it were in line of sight you would already see it.

What would prevent manufacturers from installing a tiny transmitter in the device and well as the remote, thereby making it findable without line of sight?

i don't have regular access to the net, but i do have hundreds of cds and cassettes which i want to be able to take on my travels in the coming months. i know it's possible to put cds on to mp3 players, if a bit time consuming, but how would i get my cassettes on? i fear this would take even longer. is it cheap to buy music on the net? any advice, details would be greatly apperciated.
