OK I'm new to DVR. I currently have Direct TV HD package and a Plasma TV. I don't even have a DVD player for the system yet. I do have a high-end PC (Dell) with Windows Media Player installed but I would need to purchase an additional component to use it as a recorder. I'm not against using the PC for this, just don't know how.

Anyway I want to start recording my TV, including some HD content. I need recommendations on how to go about doing it. I've never even looked into TiVo or standalone recording devices so I am looking for recommendations. My guess is I would record 10-15 hours of programming a week with at least half of that HD content.

I'm open on price but as usual I'd like a system that has a good cost/benefit ratio.

You will find that DVR's that can record in HD quality are rare and rather expensive. I have a DVR currently, one that is only capable of recording at regular definition though I have HD cable.

Recording at the highest quality on my standard definition DVR isn't that bad actually. It's definitely not as clean as the original programming though. Plus, it records in a stereo downmix as opposed to true Dolby Surround.

Good luck. If it isn't absolutely crucial to record in HD quality, then I'd recommend going with a DVR with a DVD burner all in one unit. You mentioned just how much programming you record and eventually you will chew up the GB's on the hard drive. The great thing with a built-in DVD burner is that it only takes about 5 minutes to burn an hour's worth of programming onto a DVD.

Without an internal burner, you'll get to the point where you have to choose what programs you want to delete and what you want to keep. And even if you wanted to keep them and transfer them to your computer, it would take 1 hour to record 1 hour worth of programming as opposed to the 5 minutes it would take to burn it onto DVD. Much more convenient.

get comcast. there dvr box is rented. u pay 5 dollars a month for it. and u never have to buy it like direct tv.

getting dvr truely chages the way you watch t.v.

TIVO IS OVERPRICED. Direct tv offers it to there customers so you might wanna call them up

comcast also has more HD channels than DIRECT TV.

its also cheaper :)

comcast's DVR is also the only one that can record two shows at the same time. while u watch another show.

incredible..
