I'll run the defrag, and it will finish and say that there were no files that couldn't be defragmented, but the total volume fragmentation is still at 8% and file fragmentation is at 17% (which means that 1.5 GB worth of data on my hard drive is fragmented).

And the weird thing is that i just wiped the hard drive today, and was installing my programs when I noticed that it did that (I was very careful, restarting after ever installation, and defragmenting after every restart).

It isn't an old computer...around 2 years old...but it has such strange problems sometimes (that have dumbfounded numerous tech specialists), and this will be the third time that I have been forced to format the hard drive due to unusual file disappearances and blue screens of death (with no viruses detected).

It is a Dell Dimension 3000 desktop, if that helps. And I have service pack 2, a gig of ram, and a 2.8 Ghz processor. I use it for semi-professional video editing.

I just installed quicktime player onto my computer. No errors came up during installation and no compatibility errors popped up ethier. I do have user control off though.

What happens is I will try to play any .mov file extension, quicktime opens it and plays about 5 to 25 seconds of the video, and then a small windows pops up saying

"Buffer overrun detected!

Program: C:\program files\quicktime\quicktimeplayer.exe

A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated"

I am on a HP Pvailion DV9000 laptop, running on Windows Vista Home Premium. 32-bit operating system.

Any help would greatly be appreciated!

I just spent a nice $1500 on a new dell system and it came loaded with windows vista. So many of the websites I work on, and visit that run java applets are coming up in the wrong sizes and unlike XP you do not just use your mouse to adjust the window size your asked a % or custom setting. This is very annoying having to set every window you open up!
I want my XP back!! Many of my older software packages do not work properly either. DID Vista hit the market before people had time to create patches and or driver changes?
The Vista even with a great graphics card and dual processor is just not running as smoothly as XP did for me. Are other people having as many issues with this OS?
Mr. Gates can I trade this Vista for an XP please!

I had to recently un-install Microsoft Outlook (with all it came with ) on my computer. When I tried to find the disk to re-install it, I couldn't find it. My husband told me that when we bought this Dell, they had already put Microsoft Outlook on it with the Microsoft Word and Excel. Could this be true? I just can't find the disk anywhere. I also have Att.yahoo / dsl account, could they have sent me the software?
I just dont' know how to get it back on my computer. How did we get it on our computer in the first place if we technically didn't buy it? I can't find the software anywhere!!

The file C:\Users\Ally\Desktop\birdy.ppt 2.ppt cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

what codec do i need ?

I'm building myself a new rig, with some pretty sweet gear, but I want to know about the OS.

See the thing is that I have bought Dell all my life, and as makes sense I have alot of Dell computers, when Dell sends a computer they give you a Dell disk fo the operating system, that only works in Dell systems!

So here's the problem, I have a valid XP home CD-KEY, but no way of installing it because I don't have any disks that are good (it is broken) and even if I could fix it it would still be a dell disk which only works in dell computers.

So now that you understand the situation, does anyone know how I could possibly install XP home without buying a new XP home and wasting all the money?

(Actually I have two non dell computers, and TWO good XP home CD-KEYs, and I would love to use them)

I have a question regarding page file. I know that page file is virtual memory saved in your HD that the computer uses which acts as extra RAM if your current RAM is already used up.

I have 512mb ram and my page file says 301mb(it says in the windows task manager), does it mean that my ram is using up 301mb or does it mean that I already used up 512mb RAM and my computer is using 301mb more as pf? Please try to answer in simple terms. 8D

Oh and another question is what is physical memory. Can someone explain what Physical memory (k):
Total:523808 <-- does this indicate my total ram?
Available:134712
System cache:304124 <-- what is this and why is it so high

I have a user with a problem in which Internet Explorer automatically opens .csv files (Excel) in the IE window. There used to be a popup when you went to download the file that asked if you wanted to Open or Save it. He must have unchecked the box that said to "always ask before opening this type of file." I want to get that back.

I have already tried 3 different fixes:

1. The Registry entry "Excel.Sheet.8" in HKCU. I deleted it...this fix works on another computer, but not this one for some reason.

2. I have tried going to Folder Options and then File Types and then the Advanced button and checked/unchecked the "Confirm open after download" checkbox. This didn't work either.

3. I have removed and reinstalled Internet Explorer. This didn't work either.

Is there anything else I can try other than swapping out the computer for a new one?

In particular, an RSS feed like the one on the Yahoo! Answers home page. I clicked on it and got a page of colorless questions. What does RSS stand for and what happens when you "subscribe" to a feed? Does it cost anything? Any relevant information would be appreciated.

Dear Computer Geniuses (or would it be "genii"?),

I don't know any or much Latin, but what I do know is that I'm at wit's end. I have reinstalled my OS twice because of hardware problems (but also because of seemingly irreparable infestations with Trojans, viruses and what have you), yet my PC (OS is Windows XP Professional 2002 SP2) takes around 11 minutes to load the icons on the desktop and the taskbar, before which I cannot open any applications. Also, the browser would sometimes close without warning or my whole entire PC (except the mouse) would completely freeze.

I have performed countless scans with Ad-Aware 6.0 (I tried 7.0 but there was talk of an "unhandled exception" whatever the hell that is), AVG Anti-Spyware and Bitdefender 8.0, and I also have the ZoneAlarm firewall. I've also performed a scan via Microsoft's own inbuilt software which managed only to find a I believe well-known Trojan named "Win32", but nothing else. >To be continued<
