I don't find GIMP to be very user friendly or intuitive. That's just my opinion though.

I've been using Paint Shop Pro (PSP) for years and I love it. I've never once come across a problem where I've needed PhotoShop or GIMP. PSP does it all.

The Gimp as a free version program. For a paid program I prefer Ulead Photoimpact. Download the trial and work with it. It is very user friendly and not hard to learn. In this program u can do many things. Also price wise its not bad 89.99.

I prefer the gimp for its photoshop-like features and then there's the plugins that you can add to make the gimp a whole lot better.
