Most computer on the market today use a 32 bit processor. There were a few made a couple years ago that have a special 64 bit processor. Vista x64 ONLY runs on those special processors. However a computer with a 64 bit processor can run the regular versions of Vista.

Unless you know for certain that you have a 64 bit processor (and only about 5-10% of computers do) then get the regular versions of Vista. It will work on either a 32 or a 64.

Windows Vista x64 stands for the 64-bit version of Windows Vista. You are probably running 32-bit (that's most common).

pull up the start menu
right click computer and choose properties
On that screen look at "System Type" it will tell you if you are running a 32-bit of 64-bit OS.

Hope this helps.

x64 is for the 64 bit version. If you have a 64 bit processor it would work just fine. However there are software and drivers out there that are not yet compatible at the 64 bit level. So beware of those softwares and peripherals. If you are updating, retail standard 32 bit should be fine. I think you are upgrading to Ultimate Vista? Correct? Love that version.

The one that says just vista is for 32bit computers. The one that says Vista x64 is for 64 bit computers. You have to install either 32 or x64 dependign on what your computer is. If its a 32bit install just Vista. If its a 64bit install x64, But dont install x64 on a 32 bit or vise versa. It could serverly mess up your comp and cause major problems/damages.

vista x64 is name for its type of processor

processor comes of two types
x86 family
and x64 family

x86 family are traditional one
and they work on 32-bit system architecture

x64 are new generation processor
which works on 64-bit architecture

so for each type of processor we need different architecture of software and operating systems...

so vista anc xp media center is available in x86 and x64 both
architecture

so if you have x64 family processor you will be able to install x86 architecture operating system...but OS of x64 architecture will not run on x86 porcessor

hope this satisfies your answer

it means 64 Bit, but to install it you have to have a 64 bit processor, and supported chip set. And in response to (xEastwooDx) You can put a 32 bit OS on a 64 bit processor, but not the other way around.

It means it's for a 64 bit processor instead of a 32 bit processor. It has to do with how the computer handles information and how much it can handle at one time.

it use's a 64 bit processor, which is a much more secure way of doing things but also , it means that when we get to the 1st of jan 2038 our clocks keep going as with 32 bit processors it will revert back to the 1st of Jan 1970.

64 is for computers with 64bit processors.

edit: to clarify, you can get the 32 bit for a 64 bit machine, but you can't put the 64 bit on a 32 bit machine.
