Limewire is legal, so it is fine to use it, but you cannot distribute copyrighted materials or files which you do not own. For example if you open up Microsoft Word and type in a couple of sentences of your own, say an essay and save it, you have all the rights to distribute it on limewire. Say if I uploaded music files by a famous musician that I did not have the right to, I could be fined then because I do not own the copyright to the file, rather I own a single person license meaning only I can use that file, even if I gave it to my best friend or parents I would be committing a crime.

To let you know it is pretty much anarchy on your computer and the internet. People who are skilled programmers can always make a way to share, exploit or even make free versions of something that costs money. Our computer world is contraversial because they give us CD and DVD burners and then team them up with P2P and disk imaging programs so now we can share all the stuff we want to make it our own. Even if Limewire was shutdown there are still open sourced alternatives that do the exact same thing. Microsoft, the federal government and musicians should just stop whining there is nothing they can do.

The legal case against Limewire is pending. They are expected to lose, like every other P2P developer/distributor has lost. When that happens, Limewire as it exists today will be declared "illegal."

Even before the case is decided, it is possible for a user to use Limwire illegally, and be held accountable for that use. As you are a minor, your parents would be held accountable and you would be major grounded.

Drinking and driving is illegal and being intoxicated in public is illegal, but alcohol is still legal. It all comes down to how you utilize the things in front of you.

Limewire , supposedly, has some legitimate uses, but when you download anything that's copyrighted that is illegal. The program itself, the function it performs is legal.

As for why they don't shut it down, Limewire provides the police with a window to see what files people have pirated and in what amounts. Why would they shutdown thier biggest informant.

There are many things on the internet that are illegal and kids download all kind of stuff, so it could be a way for the police to catch those responsible. Wouldn't you agree that no matter the age, one must be careful about what he or she is doing and be responsible enough to avoid doing what is illegal when aware of it?
I hope this is not confusing you more. I just wish to help in some way.

Have a wonderful day.

if they do that is is person to person it would be a lot of people all the people who download from it i guess and they have better things to do then that i would think if musicians see a drop in sales and would start blaming limewire then something would be done just guessing not for sure at all

Limewire and other file sharing tools are not illegal. They are just used by people to perform illegal activities. It would be like making owning a kitchen knife illegal because you could rob someone with it.

Limewire is not illegal in and of itself. Exchanging copy protected material is unlawful, and Limewire can facilitate this. However, this does not make Limewire illegal, any more than air is illegal for facilitating the spread of disease, or depression is illegal for facilitating suicide.

The site isn't illegal. It's the sharing of copyrighted material that is illegal. The authorities have to locate people who are sharing and downloading illegally. They can't catch all of them, because there are so many.

Having Limewire is not illegal. It's what people do with it that makes it illegal. Putting copyright materials for sharing is illegal. Downloading copyrighted material is illegal.
