I have a user with a problem in which Internet Explorer automatically opens .csv files (Excel) in the IE window. There used to be a popup when you went to download the file that asked if you wanted to Open or Save it. He must have unchecked the box that said to "always ask before opening this type of file." I want to get that back.

I have already tried 3 different fixes:

1. The Registry entry "Excel.Sheet.8" in HKCU. I deleted it...this fix works on another computer, but not this one for some reason.

2. I have tried going to Folder Options and then File Types and then the Advanced button and checked/unchecked the "Confirm open after download" checkbox. This didn't work either.

3. I have removed and reinstalled Internet Explorer. This didn't work either.

Is there anything else I can try other than swapping out the computer for a new one?

It is already set to open with Microsoft Excel, in Folder Options --> File Types.

I cannot install FireFox or any other alternative browser because all of the Intranet sites are made to be compatible with IE. We have to use IE.

1.Why don't you try to install another Internet browser like Firefox Mozilla.
2.What version on IE is that???

3. and the last one will be did you looked in the file association???
If not here is what you need to do:
open up a my computer window , then go to tools, then folder options , then click on the tab file types. and then try to look the CSV extension up and when you find it you should have that it opens with Microsoft Excel not Internet explorer or any other program. If you don't have it with Microsoft excel then click on change and change it to that.

Go back into file types. Look for CSV and XLS - advanced - tick -confirm open after download, un-tick always show extension and ALSO UN-TICK BROWSE IN SAME WINDOW. It may be greyed out on the 3rd, so don't worry. Now look for XLS and do the same. Make sure you have closed your IE window first , before doing all this. Now when you download again it will ask you to open or save. Always click save, never open!. I hate this problem and I hope some Microsoft bod read's this and fixes it !.

Have a word with your IT administrator, you need someone with more experience than yourself to fix this, you are just stabbing in the dark.
