I am also looking for a Linux OS with wireless network capabilities or detection of the wifi network card.

Ubuntu has pretty good wireless support. I would recommend its variant Xubuntu since it will be less taxing on the system.

Slackware requires much more configuration, but in my experiences is the fastest once you get it running the way you want.

Anything you put on that computer will be painfully slow.
