Software - January 2007

I just reformatted my windows XP, and I am in the process of re-installing my drivers. I know I'm supposed to install the ones with checkmarks next to them, but most categories have 2 or more checkmarks for different computer models.
For example, my Audio drivers look like this:

Analog Devices ADI 1998x integrated audio Rev: A12
(system model: 4600)
-or-
Analog Devices ADI 1998x integrated audio Rev: A10
(system model: 2400)

My question is, can I just install the drivers for the newer Rev, even though it is designed for a 4600. (keep in mind I have a 2400)

I also have these other drivers waiting to be installed:
Controller drivers
Network (NIC) drivers
Video drivers

all with similar situations

This is mainly a poll type question to satisfiy my curiousity. Windows Vista is the next version of windows, the one suceeding Windows XP

Keep in mind that you're selling yourself short without the newest operating system. Newer software will be made for Windows Vista, not Windows XP or lower. Also if your computer meets these specs it will run better with Vista:

Windows Vista Premium-Ready:

1GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1GB system memory
Support for DirectX 9 graphics w/ WDDM driver; min. 128MB graphics memory; Pixel Shader 2.0; 32 bits-per-pixel
40GB hard drive with 15GB free space

Audio output
Internet access

Unless your PC meets those specs or higher upgrade or stick with your previous operating system.

When you open a new song or clip in windows media player, and you close out, does the song automatically get saved to the library under now playing? Or does it just close out and get cleared without saving it?

When I try to open a excel document saved on my computer it only brings up a blank gray screen and no data is shown. However if I go under file/open/and click the file it appears with the data. is there a way to have this work by just double clicking the document instead of going through file/open everytime? This just recently started happening.

I have a new(ish) (7 months) hp laptop that came with microsoft works. I recently applied for a job and sent my CV (written as a wps) as an attachment. It could not be opened. I've tried changing the extension and sending myself various e-mails with attachments of files with all the variable extensions. None of them seem to work. What is this bulls*it! There must be a simple way to send attachments written in this format!?

I have formatted my computer

The driver and software for my modem and internet service provider has been deleted

My modem and internet servive provider did not give me any CD to reinstall it as they came to install it for my 6 years ago...

So I am stuck with XP SP1 and no internet

I was planning on reinstalling Office 2007 by getting to two month trial as I previously had the customer preview program

I am with Blueyonder Broadband and their technical support is ver very incompetent! ahhhhh stress!

I also have many A level deadlines on monday!

And at the moment I am using another computer temporaraly...

What do I do???

Me and a few friends for a school project are singing to a well-known song. We don't want to American Idol it, by acapella-ing (I don't know how to spell that) so we were wondering if there was a program that we can feed the song into and then be able to splice out the words. Then we could just put the remaining instrumental music onto a CD so that we would have background music while we were singing.

And does anyone know if a program like this is offered for free?

I have had my copy of Windows XP Pro Corporate installed for many years. I installed it on my desktop, my wife’s desktop and my laptop. Now for all of a sudden when my laptop starts up I get a notification every time that my copy maybe illegal. This is the same copy I have on my other two computers and have no trouble updating them. I have ran update several times over the years with no trouble but now I cannot update my laptop because Microsoft says my copy in not legal and wants me to buy another copy. I found a remove wga.exe program and ran it but all that did was remove the bootup notification. I still can’t update because Microsoft says my copy is not legal. It is legal, I have the original disk and key. What do I do? Format the drive and reinstall or what?
