When I try to open a excel document saved on my computer it only brings up a blank gray screen and no data is shown. However if I go under file/open/and click the file it appears with the data. is there a way to have this work by just double clicking the document instead of going through file/open everytime? This just recently started happening.

You will need to do these options (Try the second if the first fail)
1- After oppenning that Excel file, go to Window menu and check the unhide command, if you can click it then the document you are trying to open is hidden.
2- I think this one will solve your problem. go to
Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types > Scroll down till you find xls files (or just type xls)
When you find it click "Advanced".
Check the "Open" command and press Edit.
Make sure that there is "%1" after the line that says excel.exe
Caution: You are playing with the fire of windows here, I am not responsible for what you do wrong)
3- Re-Install Microsoft Office could be the safiest and easiest way

Sorry to bother you with all these details

The only thing I can think of trying is to open the file, and save it as something else, then delete the file that doesn't work. See if double clicking the new file works or not. Beyond that, I have no clue...

I bet its that you probably have to renew your program. For some reason, with microsoft programs, it does this, I don't know why. This happened to me with word, the saved files i could open and edit but if i wanted an altogether new one, i couldn't open it. That's my best guess. Either that or go to the document setup and see if that is an option (if that doesn't work, check your settings on control settings and it may be in there)

Do a complete system scan for virus! Then go to the Microsoft site and download any updates to Excel, and install. Then try again.

if the problem is recent, you could try a system restore. else you could reinstall the application.
