Have you ever went internet without firewall?

I did for a while and nothing bad happened, unless you go to the wrong websites.

I've e-mailed my SSN to some college administrators' e-mail addresses to access some information before. As I'm applying for the military, recruiter told me not to worry about including my SSN in file attachment of commission application to him because military e-mail addresses tend to be secure channels. Of course, I'm still paranoid someone could still phish it out. Right? Bottom line: is there such thing as a secure e-mail address?

And how do hackers hack into passwords? i mean, some people have passwords that are really tough to hack and yet people get in. how do they do that?? (don't worry, i'm not trying to hack into someone's email, i'm just wondering how they can possibly break a code or pass)

I was browsing thru the net looking for the best antispyware/spyware remover and I ran into this. I have downloaded the free scan and so far it is pretty good. I think this product is pretty new, but I just want to know if anyone out there has used this yet. I don't mind paying if it's worth it. I have read this article also:

http://www.defeatspyware.org/reviews.html?gclid=CIfZrfKYkIkCFSoIFQod10woAg

If you can read it and tell me what you think, I would really, really appreciate it. I have bought a lot of antispyware, but none of them has worked really well so far...waste of money. I want to make sure that I will get the right one this time.

Hi all !!!

I got my computer infected with w32.spybot.worm and backdoor.trojan yesterday. My Norton AntiVirus found 4 backdoor.trojans and 1 w32.spybot.worm, it quarantined it and later I deleted it permanently.

However, every time now I have system error notifications usually when Windows starts ( unable to open.dll file + Windows can't start c://...//Pragrams/Startup/win32.exe)

I found nothing by this name in Windows registry, I tried scanning in safe mode and I ran all kinds of adware programs incl. AVG, search and destroy, Ad-aware.
I don't notice any other problems except these system error notifications.

What should I do?

Thank you very much in advance and Happy Holidays to all !!

If you scan your computer using whatever virus software you have, will it find ALL viruses, spyware etc that you may have on your system or can some viruses get past scans and go un-noticed? If so, how do you do a definitive check?

I have heard these access points, or sites, may be loaded with predators and contain instructions on bomb mfg./ drug mfg./ cult and racist organizations. these places are also encrypted, and untraceable. what are they? where are they? and how do I know if my teen, or someone who has access to my computer has done so?

the details of this file as given by my firewall (zonelabs zonealarm) are
-C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe
-Generic Host Process for Win32 Services
-5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)

i have noticed that whenever i want to connect to internet, this file must be allowed access to be able to establish a connection. but i fear that if i allow complete access to internet by this file (so that firewall won't alert me when this file tries to access internet) any vulnerability in this file may compromise security of my computer

i mean if i 'know' that a file is virus infected and i still download it from a website (or my email) or i copy it from a friend's hard disk (or cd/dvd) on to my computer, is there any theoretical possibility of my computer getting infected with that virus *assuming that i do not execute/open that file*
