Sometimes being human, we tend to make mistakes believing in what used to happened but what we should realize is everyone is not nice so, everyday somebody is thinking of ways to cause harm to someone else. Sad but true.

So I would suggest that you get some sort of protection. Computers are not cheap. Because...

On the Internet, hackers use malicious code—viruses, worms, and Trojans—to try to find unprotected computers.

While some attacks are just nuisances that may play simple pranks, others are created with malicious intent.

These more severe strains may attempt to delete information from your computer, crash it, or even steal personal information, such as passwords or credit card numbers.

Fortunately, you can reduce your risk of infection by using a firewall.

How do I choose a firewall?
A firewall works by examining information coming from and going to the Internet. It identifies and stops information that comes from a dangerous location or seems suspicious.

When you set up your firewall correctly, hackers searching for vulnerable computers can't detect your computer.

Three basic types of firewalls are available. The first step is to determine which one is best for you. Your options include:

• Software firewalls

• Hardware routers

• Wireless routers

To get started, answer these questions and record your answers:

1.
How many computers will use the firewall?

2.
What operating system do you use? (This might be a version of Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh, or Linux.)

That's it. You are now ready to think about what type of firewall you want to use. There are several options, each with its own pros and cons

You never can be to careful. Some People are so destructive for no apparent reason.

most of the worst viruses come from downloads more so than just websites. Sometimes my firewall will block me from certain site so I just turn it off and every things fine. If you're just surfing the Internet though I would suggest turning it on. You won't notice anything at first but eventually your computer will start to slow down.

Good sites/bad sites have nothing to do with getting hit a rogue ports that are scanning your system. You need a good firewall that protects you from incoming rogue ports and protects your private data from leaving your pc without your permission.

for the safety of your computer & files, when connecting to the internet always have your personal firewall up together w/ an updated anti-virus and anti-spyware. better have it and not need it than to need it and not having it. better safe than sorry.
