As soon as Windows starts it freezes before i could access the hard drive for disk scanning and defragment. I tried to access Windows in Safe Mode but the system locks up before I could make a selection. Is there any method wherein i can bypass this problem so i can have full access in safe mode and diagnose my PC?

I have over 150 things saved in my favorites. Is there a way to get them on my new computer other than writing them all down and then typing them back into the new computer? Forgive my ignorance, I'm not very computer savy!

I've taken it to Best Buy, and they insist I need a new laptop for at least $1,000.00 to get a good one; even if that's true, I can't afford that right now. My son has a high school friend who's a computer genuis and has helped us many times - he says it needs a new graphics card. A couple of days ago, it started showing stripes, either horizontally or diagonally, and the screen "shakes" - don't know how else to describe it; it blurs, and we get blotches or the stripes and can't read the machine. Is this familiar to anyone? I hate walking into a tech center with what appears to be a sign that says "Hi, I'm a big dope -- screw me all you'd like!" Problem being, I AM a dope when it comes to this sort of thing...I appreciate any help (IBM Thinkpad with Windows XP; 80 GB hard drive, 512MB RAM -- if this helps at all.....

If you are from NY or CA and just surfing the web for fun, maybe you should consider turning off the PC and router to avoid the looming blackouts?

What could be the cause of all this used-up memory? Is there a virus that does this? I defragment and clean up the hard drive regularly. What could be the problem?

If I save a file in my documents that was opened in word pad, why can't I find it later?
It may or may not show up in my documents, but it doesn't show up saved in word pad even though I have saved it there. Sometimes a folder will show up in documents, but not open!
The only way it opens is through a search, then it opens in word pad. HELP.

Whenever I try to log off of my computer,(windows xp) It gives me the ending program box and says it is ending explorer.exe.
If I let the little bar go all the way to the end then I need to restart the computer because it freezes.
How do I fix this and what is explorer.exe?

I added no new hardware/software, made no changes to setting, or did anything else that I am aware of that might have precluded the ability to open multiple windows.

System: OS = XP home; memory = 1 GB; Internet Explorer = latest version with SP 1 & 2 and fully crrent updates.

My office is looking to purchase two external hard drives (one to keep at the office and one to go home with me each night) on which we will back up all of our data (that includes the data and applications) They do not have to be very high capacity (80 GB would do), but I need an external hard drive people have used and have had few or no problems with. Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
