LMAO — stands for "Laughing My **** Off" or "Laughing My *** Off" and has several variations itself:

ROFL/ROTFL — Rolling On the Floor, Laughing. Roffle is now also a widely used variation of ROFL, along with its own variations (such as the popular ROFLcopter); and of course in any permutation, such as: ROFLMAO

There is so such slang word as imao that I know of at the moment.

I've not seen "imao" - perhaps you mean "lmao" (laughing my *** off)

or

"imho" (In my humble opinion)

It is actually LMAO, you probably see it as lmao, the l is an L but in lowercase, not an i in uppercase. And yes, its Laughing my buttocks off. unless they wrote a typo and called you a lamo, in that case you should disregard them as a friend and block them from your buddy list.
