Had trouble with booting up, so I repaired the boot.ini. I ran chkdsk /r and after that it booted up. It took forever to load and then restarted. This time it said that C:\windows\config\system32 was missing or corrupted. I finally format c: and reinstalled windows xp pro. Everything seemed to be going great and I started reloading programs, norton av first. Windows began downloading updates and I restarted a couple of times for that. The final windows update had 71 updates. I clicked on the shield at the bottom of the screen to begin updates and then went to watch tv. I went back to check it a few hous later and there were three error windows for corrupted files. I closed them out and tried to reboot and same thind as before. CHKDSK states that one or more files are corrupt and unrecoverable. Anyone have ideas on what to do know? Might be harware failure of some kind. Suggestions?

My computer is reaching its end soon, its a desktop and i will be graduating college in a few months. Wanted to get the computer before i'm out for the student discounts.

I figure a laptop would be better for work, but i'm also big into gaming.

Should i jsut get a high end laptop, or would it be better to get a laptop that works and then get a high end desktop.....

I mean the next desktop i was looking at was gonna run me about 3000$ just for the tower.....not sure if i can even find a laptop with teh same specs

I would like to know which of the following Wireless internet features would be available BY DEFAULT in a laptop(i.e. we do not need to buy any extra peripheral to include the feature):
1. WiFi
2. WiMax
3.Bluetooth

For those of the above which requires any extra peripheral to include the feature please indicate what peripheral to add.

I was in Ireland for the last 6 months (I'm from NY). While there, I recharged my laptop with a plug adapter. The AC adapter for my laptop (a Dell Inspiron 9100) allowed a European, 220 V charge, so I figured I was OK.

The battery stopped holding a full charge after a while, though I know that is common. The AC adapter would get incredibly hot as well, and the laptop seemed to be overheating quite often. Now that I'm back home, as was the case there, my laptop seems to have heating issues, and in any case, it's running slower. I am rather sure that it's not due to any program/virus/whatever, but it's possible. In any case, I have a fan board thing USB device under it cooling things down, hopefully to some effect.

I'm going to replace my battery in any event. Could my AC adapter be fried, or has my computer irrevocably taken the effects of overheating badly? Maybe the fan board is slowing me down? Any ideas?

My acer laptop is making a terrible noise through the sound. I have disconnected the speakers but this noise still comes through head phones. Can I disable this sound on the motherboard and run a usb sound device to give me normal sound - if so, what are the steps to doing this.

I have no idea why my hard drive is running hot.

My CPU isn't running hot, but my hard drive is.

For what it is worth (maybe it is part of the problem) I have a SATA drive, I had to turn whatever it does off in the BIOS so I could install windows, and I can't start up my computer with it on without getting a BSOD so I don't know if that is the problem. My hard drive is running @ 59 Celcius, it is very hot on my lap. thanks.

My Notebook monitor is heating up. Its just below where the LCD screen is. Its below where Windows Toolbar is.. and above where the F9 key is. It heats up, but you can still touch that area. Should i be worried?

I heard that its just the area where the cords run through to power the moniter up.

This happens alot but always not at the same time. Last night it did it time after time. The computer is fairly new (less or about a year old), and its a Compaq laptop. I think it may have overheated a few times cause I rarely shut it down. I have cooled it down and am going to buy a fan if that is the case. Could this be the power source problem? Although it is new, if it is a power source problem, how much would it cost to fix it??
