My acer laptop is making a terrible noise through the sound. I have disconnected the speakers but this noise still comes through head phones. Can I disable this sound on the motherboard and run a usb sound device to give me normal sound - if so, what are the steps to doing this.

USB sound device? Sorry, I don't think that exists.

Try the troubleshooting steps already suggested & try re-installing the sound drivers. But if the sound (or video) actually fail on a laptop, it's gotta go in for repair- probably a motherboard replacement scenario. Hopefully under warranty...

You should be able to do this through the cmos settings. While your computer is booting it will give you the option for settings. It will be a F1-F12 (function key) to get into cmos.
And by the way, they make all kinds of sound cards that plug into your USB ports. Just go to Yahoo search and type in USB sound cards.
