I would go with a desktop. They are more powerful with more high tech stuff. Plus they are not nearly as expensive.
Laptops are okay if you are going to use it for small projects, work, writting stuff, etc. The batteries are horrible and cost way too much if you are just going to leave it on a desk.
For gaming purposes, go with the desktop.

I think you can get a laptop that can do anything a desktop can do...EXCEPT: for laptops, overheating is endemic: the fans are on the bottom, of course, with small space for ventilation! Think about it. With a tower, you have all that space around the sides for constant ventilation of all components. A tower, then, also has room for INTERNAL housing of components (like, say, extra hard drives, if you think you'll need'em), more USB holes (if you think you'll need 'em), and thus SOME freedom (perhaps?) from the cable tangle behind your desk...?
I mention overheating because...my HP overheated twice this past year and I had to rebuild the OS and re-install all software and personal data (grrr...)
I WILL admit, though, that I have switched from a desktop to laptop

Well for $3000 you can get a dell inspirion laptop with blu ray and a nVIDIA 8600gt 256meg, and 2 gig of ram, with dual hardrives, and a intel centrino duo 2.4GHz processor. but if the vram is a little skimpy you can get an hp dv9500t with 8600gt gpu and an intel centrino duo processor with 2.2 GHz and 2 gig of ram for $1700.

You should get a desktop. It's cheaper, easier to use, and more disk space.
