This happens alot but always not at the same time. Last night it did it time after time. The computer is fairly new (less or about a year old), and its a Compaq laptop. I think it may have overheated a few times cause I rarely shut it down. I have cooled it down and am going to buy a fan if that is the case. Could this be the power source problem? Although it is new, if it is a power source problem, how much would it cost to fix it??

Before you spend any money, check "Power Options" in the Control Panel. Make sure everything under the "Plugged in" column is set to "Never".

Also, sometimes when there's some sort of a fatal system error, instead of showing a blue screen of death Windows will just automatically restart.

If this is the case, try this:
1) Right click My Computer on the desktop
2) Click Properties
3) In the System Properties window, click the Advanced tab
4) In the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings
5) Uncheck "Automatically restart" and hit keep hitting OK to get out of there.

Now, if there's software causing some a fatal system error, you'll get an error message that will hopefully tell you more about the problem you're having.

Hope this helps.

In addition to what the people said about the thing overheating...make sure the vents aren't blocked, get a cooling pad, etc...it isn't recommended to run a laptop for long periods at a time. Use it, then shut it down, or at least put it to hibernate.

I had a Compaq Laptop, the same thing happened, but it ended up with the motherboard being fried, so had to get rid of it, hope this helps.

Requires a new PSU fitting. Not very expensive these days. You could probably get it done free on warranty if its under a year old.

If it is new everything should be covered under warranty. If you don't have warranty a new power supply is usually something like $89.
