Had trouble with booting up, so I repaired the boot.ini. I ran chkdsk /r and after that it booted up. It took forever to load and then restarted. This time it said that C:\windows\config\system32 was missing or corrupted. I finally format c: and reinstalled windows xp pro. Everything seemed to be going great and I started reloading programs, norton av first. Windows began downloading updates and I restarted a couple of times for that. The final windows update had 71 updates. I clicked on the shield at the bottom of the screen to begin updates and then went to watch tv. I went back to check it a few hous later and there were three error windows for corrupted files. I closed them out and tried to reboot and same thind as before. CHKDSK states that one or more files are corrupt and unrecoverable. Anyone have ideas on what to do know? Might be harware failure of some kind. Suggestions?

I think that your hard drive is failing. Physical failures of your hard drive can not be repaired by the checkdisk utility. A hard drive is very easy to replace.

First, determine the connection of your laptop. Unless it is fairly new, it should be an ATA-6 connection. Pick your hard drive. Remember, the larger and faster your hard drive, the more heat it will generate. I like the Hitatchi 80gb 7200rpm. Fast, OK storage, but it does not generate much heat. Pick up some tools and an anti static wrist strap. You don't want to ruin your hard drive by handling it.

Turn your laptop over. Look for the symbol with multiple circles, that is where your hard drive is. (You seem to know computers and probably know this symbol, so I put it here for those that do not know what it means.) Remove the plate covering the hard drive. (Many laptops cover the screws with rubber grommets, so you will have to pry those out.) Gently pull out the hard drive. Slow and sure will get it out. The hard drive will probably be housed in some type of harness. Remove the old hard drive and place the new hard drive in the harness EXACTLY as the previous hard drive was housed in it. (it is very easy to insert the hard drive in the harness upside down.) Reinsert the new hard drive and you are ready to reinstall the OS and all programs.

I suggest that you get a 7200rpm hard drive. It's amazing the difference in performance that a 7200rpm has as compared to a 5400rpm.

Do you happen to have another stick of RAM to try? Has the hard drive been making a lot of noises lately, that would be the next thing to check.
