I had used my laptop today without any problems. Yet now when I tried to turn my laptop on I get this message:

Stop: c0000218 (registry file failure)
The registry cannot load hive (file): /systemroot/system32/config/SOFTWARE or its log or alternate is corrupt, absent or not writeable (the slashes face the other way)

Beginning dump of physical memory. Physical memory dump complete.

What does this mean and how do I fix it!!

I have a Dell laptop. When the laptop is booted you get a BSOD. I took the drive out and hooked it up to a usb / laptop harddrive connector. The Drive is detected and is installed by windows. Doesn't show up in My Computer and everytime i try to open up Computer Management to see disk condition it freezes up the computer. Most of the time the drive does not click but once and awhile it makes a clicking noise.

Is there anyway to recover the data on the harddrive?

I'm really desperate and I cant afford to send to a data recovery center at the moment.

The Harddrive is a IBM 30gb 4200rpm drive which i put a new one in laptop. All i want is the data off this drive

I don't touch the bottom half of it and simply use it like a desktop, still its annoying if I put it on my lap and it touchs my skin. Was there a recall on this or anything?

Using a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo A1645 running Windows XP, if you put the computer on standby then try to "wake" it, sometimes the machine makes a "clicking" sound when you boot it up followed by a long pause at which point it attempts to search for an operating system via DHCP. When it fails to find the operating system via the network, it prompts me to insert bootable media device and press any key.

Sometimes I can get the system to boot correctly by selecting F2 and changing the order of one of the boot priority items (for example: change the CD/DVD drive from position 4 to position 3). On restart, Windows sometimes boots up but it may take 3 or 7 tries.

Sometimes the message on boot up says that the Primary Master Hard Drive is damaged and then it sends me to the boot menu to select a bootable drive.

I also tried to install SP2 to see if it would help put I still experience the problems above.

Why is it so inconsistant? Once running there are no problems. How can I fix this?

I am always surfing the internet, I am a college student so I right a lot of papers, Microsoft Office is a must have, Instant messaging is how i talk to a lot of my friends, i love taking and storing pictures. I also play movies and music. Anything I can store on my computer I usually do.
So, are there any ideas for a new computer? I also prefer laptops, but if a desktop is better, let me know.
