I had used my laptop today without any problems. Yet now when I tried to turn my laptop on I get this message:

Stop: c0000218 (registry file failure)
The registry cannot load hive (file): /systemroot/system32/config/SOFTWARE or its log or alternate is corrupt, absent or not writeable (the slashes face the other way)

Beginning dump of physical memory. Physical memory dump complete.

What does this mean and how do I fix it!!

Did you install anything new the last time it worked? Sounds like something has corrupted a registry key and Windows is failing to load. To fix, try these:

1) Turn off Laptop. Turn back on and keep pressing the F8 key. When a boot list appears, select "Last Known Good State". If Windows boots properly from there, you should be fine - but reboot the PC to make sure. If this fails...

2) Turn off Laptop. Turn back on and keep pressing the F8 key. When the boot list appears, select "Safe Mode". This should take you to windows in it's basic form. From there, press START > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

From that program, restore the PC to a time you knew it worked. The wizard makes it straight forward. If this still fails, or if you are unable to boot into Safe Mode, I suspect you will need to find your Windows CD and try a Windows Repair from there.

To run a Windows Repair, boot off the CD and follow the prompts.

You could also try a parallel install of Windows which essentially means you have two copies of Windows installed side by side. Using the working copy you can fix the faulty one. For more information on this, see the Microsoft Tech note:

Good Luck.

Press F8 just as Windows starts to load and you will get a screen with options for Windows startup. Highlight "Last Known Good Configuration" and press Enter. That will load the last know good registry settings.

it means nothing if it happens once, however if it keeps happening, you may need to re-install windows to fix it.
