this is a laptop built in the year 2000, ergo 6 years old. the best thing on it is the Windows XP Pro on a CD. i suppose you found it on ebay and are on a tight budget.
what's wrong with this laptop? a 700MHz Celeron can't run Windows XP with only 192MB. laptops have an estimated life span of 4 - 6 years, in some exceptions up to 8 years, but after 5 years every computer is definitely old. reconfiguring something on an old laptop is only wasting more money - sorry for the bad news, but this is fact.

cheapest new notebooks nowadays are around $400 - $500, but you haven't to reconfigure anything and there is also a warranty of 1 year.
this is a pretty good notebook for $500

a hint for all Celeron bashers: the Celerons of the 4xx series have the same core as the Core Solo and Core Duo and are therefore pretty good.

If she is going to be downloading graphics and music, that processor will be a little slow. Also is the CD Rom a read/write drive? For basic work such as reports and such, that would be plenty, but if she wants to get into the other stuff I would want more RAM, a faster processor, and a larger hard drive.

That system won't cut it. It's already WAY out of date and is likely to be old enough to be near to the end of it's lifecycle... meaning that it's likely about to be ready to die.

Go with the HP nc6320 Windows XP Professional Edition Solo T1300 1.66GHz Processor 40GB 512MB DVD-CDRW Drive 15XGA Integrated Wireless Internet Notebook that you can get for less than $1,000 at www.stupidcheapcomputers.net. It's new and will be able to take her thru her entire college.

IBM?? More aimed toward business i would go with a DELL more user friendly and it lets you customize it how you wish.

Based on what your needing it for i would go with at least a Pentium M if stilled offered or a Pentium Due.

It's a little slow, but it will work...not sure about the movies though. For research and typing papers it will work fine...and probably for music too.
