Laptops & Notebooks - December 2006

The screen saver will stay on for about 10 seconds and then it pops back up like someone moved the mouse?? I have a Dell Laptop and currently have these applications running, however it does it whether they are running or not: Yahoo Widget Engine, MS Outlook, ITunes, and AIM 6.0. Thanks if you can help!

My laptop hard drive took a dump I took it into the shop to have some info pulled from it they could not pull the info, they told me if I could find someone to rebuild the hard drive then the info could be gotten. Is this true can a hard drive be rebuilt and info retrived?? If so what would a fair guess be as far as cost and where would I find someone to do this??Thank you for any info you can help me with.

I have a sony vaio notebook, model #PCG-V505B. I first changed the setting to boot from CD rom. The CD rom read the recovery start up disc OK. Then asked to insert disc1 now the CD rom won't read the disc at all. It kept asking to insert disc 1. So then I hit F2 to boot from hard disk. The message appears saying no operating system. Is there any solution to try to recover window XP operating system? Please help. Thanks.

it is a Compaq Presario laptop with Windows XP-Professional. Originally it had XP-Home but later i upgraded it. I want to erase everything that is there and reload all the programs. Basically, i need to return the laptop to what it was before i loaded my stuff on it.

Ok my son pulled half the keys off my laptop and I got them all back on except 8 on the very botttom row on each side of space bar...
The row goes FN __ __ __ __spacebar__ __ __ __ The keys I have are 2 alt keys, 2 windows keys, 1 ctrl key, 1 forward slash key,1 insert key, and 1 key with a rectangle with lines and arrow( not sure what its called, can someone help fill in the blanks? Also it's a gateway laptop that was bought 2 1/2 years ago and thats all I know

Whats the best memory and speed for playing PC stratagy games.
I have 256 ram which i was told was muck.
I'm currently playing Age of Empires 3 Warchiefs and it's too slow + i can't play the campain because i don't have enough ram.
It's a windows xp.

I am not techno savvy at all, but enjoy the challenge (!) I bought the laptop 2nd hand, and it came with the original 10 or 15 gig hard drive (tiny, I know.) What do I need to know to upgrade it? It has 256mb RAM, and that will need upgrading too, but first the hard drive, as I am down to the last few mb!!! Please share your knowledge with me, and please be nice, I am just a girl trying to learn.

Over the years Dell worked hard to build up a good international reputation.
Question: How could Dell par up with McAfee software provider and sell Dell Computers already installed with the same???
That provides buyers with nothing but problems, frustration...etc.
McAfee's Cust.Reps'. number is given as 1-800-269-6990 to be contacted for help. A young male voice rattling away on a disrespectfully high speed speech and provide the information to open web-site: “Dell.McAfeehelp.com”. Yahoo and Google search engines both responses that name (in diff. variations) “did not match any documents”.
I consider that as an insult from McAfee’s part. I am working regularly with PC since 1985 and associate my platforms with NORTON misc. anti-virus soft wares,
updated on yearly basis. Since that time I have had NO PROBLEM with Norton Products. Sad that Dell reputation will slide down with McAfee products. I certainly will not recommend again Dell Computer to any one else again.

Can I upgrade or somehow improve my laptop's graphic card, Mobility Radeon 7500, to play 3D games like Second Life? I've seen some sites that suggest you can download codes and such to improve performance, but will anything allow me to play 3-D games?

Second Life requires ATI Radeon 8500, 9250, or better graphics card.

Does lightning affect a laptop not plugged to the mains BUT plugged to Starhub cable modem and still surfing online?

Should I unplug both the mains and also the internet usb cable?
I want to still be able to surf online but if it affects the laptop/notebook, then I would rather NOT surf the net during lightnings.

I went under Control Panel, Device manager and it gave me this error message "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)". I tried doing a system restore but it didn't work. Also i tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device but that too didn't work. What should i do?
