Most of the advice already given is very sound. Turn the machine off and turn it upside down. Most 'laptops draw air in from the bottom so they suck in muck and block if you place them on a soft surface. If you have a pipetype vacuum hold the nozzle over the underside vents and move it back and forth. If you can at the same time blow (with your mouth) into the side or rear vents. Chances are you'll see a build up of fluff etc work it's way out to the vacuum. Having done this stand the machine on a hard surface and run it. Listen for the fan. If your fan has failed the machine will shut down.
Best way to check that is to open a few programmes and get the cpu working overtime. You should hear the fan start up after a short time.
What's the biggest killer of the laptop ? Heat!
If your going to use it in bed or on your lap stand it on a breadboard or tray.

Sounds very like an overheat problem. Use it on a hard surface so air can get to the vents in the bottom. It's one of the reasons laptops are suddenly now called notebooks - 'cos they don't work very well on your lap! Can you hear the fan running? It might cut in and out from time to time.
Could also be a virus.

It's almost definately overheating. What kind is it and what do you use it for? Place it on a flat hard surface, never on a cushion, bed, or anything that blocks the fans. Clean your fans using compressed air. Re-apply cooling gel to the video card and cpu (call tech-support for specifics. I don't recommend cracking the case if you don't know your way around a computer). You could also try buying a cooling pad which has extra fans and/or a computer brace that props it up a little, allowing for better air circulation.
You can download SpeedFan to monitor your computer's heat.

Over heating is the first point when diagnosing problems like this. make sue the laptop has enough room underneath it for air to pass freely. How hot is your laptop when it over heats?
You can also go into the bios (hitting F1, DEL, or F10 key during boot up) and have a look in the settings, they may be a temperature reading. eave your computer on and watch this number.
Also check and if you can chnage your battery!

Are the ventilation fans on the bottom? If so, put your laptop on books, a wire cage or something that alows the fans to ventilate. It could be overheating.
