I went under Control Panel, Device manager and it gave me this error message "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)". I tried doing a system restore but it didn't work. Also i tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device but that too didn't work. What should i do?

Have a Windows XP disk or your hardware's restore disks present and do the following:

Reasons for this error include a driver that is not present; a
binary file that is corrupt; a file I/O problem, or a driver that references an entry point in another binary file that could not be loaded.

Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooting wizard.

First of all look in

control panel / systems / hardware / device manager.

Dvd/CD driver if there is anything wrong you get a clue here
Typically a yellow. A black exclamation point (!) on a yellow field indicates the device is in a problem state. Note that a device that is in a problem state can be functioning.

If the CD drive indeed has a problem after verifying this on the device manager as describe above, you then could try downloading the device driver. The easiest way to do this is through the device manufactures web site. Or you can try doing a search for it on the internet.

Before you install it. Do a restaurantion point on your computer, since you never know how your computer might react to the new driver installation, besides is a good idea to do a restaurantion point any time you change or add something on your computer anway.

Good luck and keep us posted.

First check this and follow the instructions.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123 Where did you reinstall the driver from? Get the latest driver from the manufacturer's website of your computer. You may need to go to the manufaturer of the cd drive (be sure it'sthe right driver first! it should say in the Device Manager or System Info) or Google the error code.If you installed something before this happened try to uninstall it. On Microsoft it say "corrupted driver". What recent changes could have done that? Depending on the brand of computer there may be some diagnostics you can run from onboard diagnostics. If it'sa Dell purchased (originally) before Sept 29, 2004 with just the Service Tag you can get troubleshooting help. Good Luck

sounds like the drive may be dead.

If you know how to remove it, try this:
power down laptop.
physically remove drive from laptop
power back up laptop
shut down system
reinstall drive in laptop
restart laptop

this may do it. Sometimes it just gets dislogged.
if the drive has a light that indicates when the drive is active, and that light stays on constant, it's a good indication that the drive is done.
