I am not techno savvy at all, but enjoy the challenge (!) I bought the laptop 2nd hand, and it came with the original 10 or 15 gig hard drive (tiny, I know.) What do I need to know to upgrade it? It has 256mb RAM, and that will need upgrading too, but first the hard drive, as I am down to the last few mb!!! Please share your knowledge with me, and please be nice, I am just a girl trying to learn.

C600s are nice machines. They use a standard sized laptop hard drive with IDE connection. Be aware that laptop drives are more expensive then desktop hard drives.

When you removed the old hard drive you will find a connector (long and flat with copper contacts) on the back. That comes off leaving the bare "wires" on the back of the drive exposed. When you purchase the new drive, it will come with the "bare wires". You will need to move that connector over to the new drive. Careful not to bend the pins will prying it off. (I usually have to straighten the last couple back up)

If you check the Dell website, they do offer larger drives there. But you can also find them about anywhere. Not aware of any size limits on the C600. have gone as large as 60 GB.

Dell sells a HDD up to 100Gig for the C600 on their website. Click on the link below, or go to Dell.com, search for Latitude C600 support. Get a 2.5" 60Gig - better price for the size. Make sure you buy an IDE, not a SATA. SATA wasn't available when the Latitudes were sold.

You can go for 20 or 40 GB or even more depending upon how much space you need. 40 is pretty good for high to medium storage space.
As for RAM, updating your HD would not require you to update RAM. If you want better speed then go for RAM. 256 is pretty good but if you want you can update it to 512.
