Get the Sony Vaio - they are the best looking and most stable. I have never had one that broke down...

I just bought the Advent 7111 from PC World and am very happy with it - you'd be hard pressed to get a similar spec laptop for £499.99 the brand is owned by DSG (who own PC World / Dixons / Currys). Its a good processor backed up with 1Gb memory and a respectable 80Gb hard disk with plenty of additional ports (4 USB, 3in1 memory card reader and a Firewire connector for digital camcorders) In terms of reliability I couldn't comment, though some people prefer a big name such as Sony. If you haggle like hell with the "managers" at PC World they can offer some other fairly good discounts on bundled kit like a carry case etc etc

If you choices really are limited to those two, the Sony wins hands down. There are others though, an equal spec Dell f'rinstance would work out cheaper - and I've never had any problems with Dell products myself.

I thoroughly love my Vaio VGN-S150 - the sony laptops are top notch.
If you have time to spare (which it sounds like you don't), I would suggest laptops in this order:
IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad
Compaq Evo Series
Sony Vaio
The first two are business class machines - they last forever.

i have an Advent laptop and i wish i'd never bought it.It's slow and the battery doesn't last long.Look at the cpu spec, anything under 1.50 Ghz isn't worth looking at.Mind you it depends
what your Father in-law wants to use it for.
Try Dell computers, they have an excellent reputation and are very reasonabley priced.

I'm leaning towards the VAIO for proven reliability, usability and their reputation as a company.

don't rule out Lenovo (its the old IBM range)
dont rule out MSI, Acer
personally in my view you pay a heck of premium for buying Sony... but its your money, its your decision
