You should buy more ram. It is pretty simple to install yourself. You can buy it online or at a place like bestbuy for pretty cheap. You can buy 256 for about 30 bucks and 512 for about fifty or sixty bucks. You can also buy 1gb for a little bit more.
If you search the web for memory upgrades you can find the ones that scan your computer and tell you how much ram you can add and what difference in performance each one would make

You could play it on 512mb but it would be painfully slow! 1GB+ would be best and as others have said upgrading is relatively easy. If you cannot afford to upgrade then have you tried older, less processor hungry games that still offer the depth you obviously want. Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is a classic and less than a fiver.

256 is far far too low 1GB wud be the absolute minimum but for gaming u shud really go with as much as u can afford, try for at least 2GB but 1GB is absolute minimum and thats only if u rn't installing loads of programs as well.

Take your laptop online to www.crucial.com, where you can get a scan of your machine with details of what you can do to gee up the RAM. 256 is barely enough to keep it alive!

basically the saying goes as "the more the merrier"
i would recommend minimum of 1gb, you go up to 3gb but depends on your motherboard, if it can handle it..
also your processor should be 2.6ghz minimum,.....
i'd advise either intel pentium 4 processer or amd athlon... a high version
