Laptops & Notebooks - December 2006

If you equip a laptop with a 7200 hard drive and all other specs are about equal (p4 for both, 1028 RAM), will it perform as well as a desktop for music recording? If not, how much worse? Thank you for the input.

My notebook came with WinXP Home but I changed it to WinXP Professional. Since then I keep seeing 256MB RAM instead of the 1024MB RAM which is the correct memory size. What should I do?

When my husband was on the computer last night, it all of the sudden said "preparing for hibernation" and then it cut off. Now it won't come back on. The 3 amber colored lights (oneis power, one is battery, not sure on middle one - looks like a cylinder) on the front of it blink when I press the power button but nothing happpens. The power supply blinks green and then goes away when it normally stays green all the time. But the laptop won't start without the power supply plugged in at all - which it should since it has a perfectly good battery. I checked and my battery was not one of the recalled ones. this laptop is only 2 years old.

any suggestions?

Actually, what's the difference between a laptop and a notebook computer?

I am going to buy a computer, but I have no idea which one is the best brand!
I have heard that the best are VAIO (Sony), Dell, HP and Toshiba.
But some say Toshiba is bad...

What do you think of Dell?

Any advice on how to upload sound from MiniDisc Recorder on to Mac? Have got as far as connecting to digital audio in port, but nothing seems to be happening. Also, is it better to use GarageBand application to play with sound, or can I run it through iMovie?

that had allegedly already been done to the computer. The computer had already been opened. My thinking is that we may have been sold an open box unit. Question- would a retailer ever "optimize" a computer straight from the factory. If so, why?

i have a compaq v5000 laptop.. and today when i booted up my windows xp sp2 there was no DVD drive in "my computer".Also the tray is also not coming out... and worst of all... after i rebooted it a blue screen came "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage STOP:0x0000007B" . Its not gettin in to Windows.. And also DVD drive is not working.. so cant install from CD... No floppy drive in this laptop.PLEASE PLEAsE PLEASE help... i am helpless

I have been impressed with quality of TOSHIBA and my requirement matches with TOSHIBA U200.

I like SONAY VAIO small laptops for its style but afraid whether they are good for long term and performance stuff.

I like Dell XPS because of its configuration of CORE DUO plus similar small sized 12 inches screen ...

am looking at laptop with dvd recorder, card reader everything packed in small unit not bulky and heavy ones but it should be durable as well. I know its asking for too much but please help me.

Which one out of this should be best if am concerned about
"QUALITY, PERFORMANCE and SMALL SIZE.

Ofcourse cost does matter so may be SONY may not fit in here.


Also guide me where exactly are your recommended models cheaper. Am in Kuwait and can buy things from UK or USA through amazon sort of facilities.

As we get nearer to xmas the last thing I have to buy is a laptop. I am dreading going shopping. Should I take the easy option and order from Dell (their prices are good and both my brothers have had a pc and lap top from them, and have no problems that I am aware of). Or should I make the trip to PC World. The laptop if for gaming, internet and watching dvds (light usuage).
