that had allegedly already been done to the computer. The computer had already been opened. My thinking is that we may have been sold an open box unit. Question- would a retailer ever "optimize" a computer straight from the factory. If so, why?

Sounds like a rip off too me.... Contact the manufacturer for details on the computer... ie its status etc... You may have a complaint...

This is actually not tuning. It's rather steeplechase. Professionals that optimize systems use complex soft hardware means to feel every signal track. Management of all such stuff can push away even advanced experts. But this is the way brandname PCs are created.

However, we have a different purpose - we are going to make it just more or less balanced. Fortunately, modern processors and OS are so smart that they have necessary measurement tools.

Basically this: - In order for a retailer to charge you for 'optimization' you first have to agree to have your system optimized. When you purchase a system from the factory, you expect a factory built, installed and tuned system, not a "factory prepared, retailer opens the box and raises the price" scheme.

YOU'VE BEEN RIPPED OFF!!!

Besides,a there are free programs on the internet that accomplish the same task WITH A GUARANTEE!!!

Good Luck!

Complete rip off. Many would argue the best optimization you can perform is to simply re-install the operating system and systems tend to get sluggish over time. But then the salesman would have said that.
Tell them to give you your money back and "un-optimize" it if needed and see what they do.

Ask for a refund. Or, let them explain to a Judge why they charged her.
