If you are running a Windows machine then the monitor automatically saves power by dimming your monitor, you might have accidentally changed a setting so that it dims it way too much. Try and find this in your display properties. Might be under the Screen Saver Tab, Monitor Power. if not do a little searching.

If you plug your laptop into a wall outlet and it still has the same problem then consult someone.

IS this when you do not move the mouse for 3 secs? If so you need to change the power management settings to keep the backlight on for more time. If it is happening 3 secs after you start the computer and never coming back, it is a different prob. All laptops have some setting to turn off the backlight after some time to save battery. You need to find where yours had the power management settings.

The monitor or display of a computer is the primary user interface. Monitor problems are some of the most common computer problems since the voltages inside a monitor can be as high as 10 KV. Many of the problems can be fixed yourself by simply changing the settings. Detailed instructions available at http://fixit.in/monitor.html

try going to like laptop options where you decide how long the screensaver goes on for maybe. or like laptop setting where you decide when it goes on hibernate and stuff. maybe you have like a battery conserving option turned on which makes your screen dark.
