It is really hard to specify a specific laptop (or even desktop) when each person is different. Buy something within your budget that can perform the tasks that you need to do. If you aren't going to be doing a lot of gaming or high end multimedia, you probably won't need a great video card and lots of ram. Or blazing fast CPU for that matter. Everyone feels the need to go out and buy the newest of the new, just to say they have the cutting edge equipment. But you don't need all that just to browse, send e-mail and do some word processing. It is just overkill.
My first laptop was a Toshiba Satellite and I loved it. Built in wireless card for when I went to Starbucks or the library, no messing around with a PCMCIA wi-fi card or adapter. 15 inch screen so not as small as others out there.
And my Dell desktop was okay, so you could try one of their laptops I suppose but I absolutely hate their tech support staff. I'm all for outsourcing and giving impoverished people a chance to make a few bucks. But only if I can clearly understand you and if you have haklf a clue as to how my problem can be solved. 9 times out of 10, I figure out my own problem while on hold for Dell tech support and the tenth time, the problem goes unfixed because the agent doesn't know what they are doing.

Look around at online electronics stores for "open box" laptops. What this means is that someone bought the laptop for full price opened the box, and decided they didnt want it. In most cases the packaging has not been disturbed. The store cannot sell it at full price so it gets discounted. It literally is good as new. However, if you do want a new laptop for cheap, I recommend Acer brand. Some of their computers are very cheap but they have excellent design features and build quality. Also Toshiba makes some good cheap laptops although the build quality is sometimes a little less. I would personally stay away from Dell's cheaper laptops because they really skimp on features and you may be very disappointed with what you get.

I have ACER Travelmate and COMPAQ HP.
Compaq have a good display compare to ACER.
My friend bought an TOSHIBA Sattellite, about $640
- Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo
- memory 512
- DVD-Writer
- Wireless Lan
- Bundled with XP Home Edition
the drawback of Toshiba is : their 'windows' key position is weird
my suggestion :
- Toshiba if you can accept their weirdness
- Compaq HP if you have enough buget and ready to lift 'more' weight (its heavier than the other laptop).
- DELL (alternative for low budget)
- ACER (not recommended)

If you are in UK, I would strongly recommend Alienware. For the budget you have quoted you can get an "Essentials" Alienware laptop, which will beat any other brand in performance for the same price. The basic laptop is also upgradable thereby enhancing the total life and usability. The packed software bundle and service is also quite amazing.
Christmas deals are also on, so here's the website with the link for the product:
http://alienware.co.uk/product_detail_pages/Sentia_m3450/sentia_overview.aspx?SysCode=PC-EU-LT-SENTIA3450&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT
Note: I don't work for Alienware, I dont endorse them and I wont get any referral or otherwise benefits from this. This is just a personal recommendation, as I would to a friend IRL.

depends on your intended use. if you want a laptop for the bare essentials, office work and occasional internet browising, then you should be able to find a great well-rounded lptop for that price.
if you are looking for a more media based laptop for movies, music, or gaming, you are gonna need something with a large hard drive to store media files, a powerful graphics card, for video processing speed, and a good sound card for crisp quality audio.
these are obviously more expensive, but depending on your intended use, are well worth it. Dell, HP, Compaq, and Toshiba are good solid machines for nearly anything. if you want a more media charged laptop you can go for a Sony Vaio, or for extreme gaming/maximum media flexibility, Alienware is great, but I doubt you'll find a Vaio or Alienware that fits your budget.
stay away from anything else, like Emachines, or any other computer that seems too good to be true. the specs may be the same, but the computers are pure crap. they break down within a few months, to a year. hope this helps you out a bit. good luck with your shopping!

properly first you will desire to get the Microsoft place of work kit which could be got here across at place of work depot or circuitt city or some the place else like that. If youi are a student you will get it for plenty extra low-fee . Then i could propose geting A T and T information superhighway this is speedy and it in basic terms costs 15$ a month! All you do is flow on the information superhighway and seek A T and T information superhighway then seek for a telephone umber call the style and that they'll deliver you the great kit! this is super and you would be on the information superhighway maximum surprising away!

I'd go with Dell - laptops are notorious for breaking down (no matter how much you spend on them), and Dell seem to have the "we'll be there tomorrow to fix it" service pretty well sewn up (as long as you purchase this option, of course!).
