If you equip a laptop with a 7200 hard drive and all other specs are about equal (p4 for both, 1028 RAM), will it perform as well as a desktop for music recording? If not, how much worse? Thank you for the input.

Will a laptop with a 7200 RPM drive and comparable specs (P4 system, 1028 RAM) perform as well as a desktop for music studio programs such as Cubase or Logic? Thanks for any and all input.

More important is the fact that most laptops will need an external sound input as the mic input is mono.
I guess it depends on what type of recording you want to do eg. if you are using a multi-track sound card? etc. but I find my laptop works fine for analogue recording. You may find some useful information at http://www.cassette2cd.co.uk/DIY

What determines the quality of music recording is the quality of the sound card. Having additional memory, hard drive ,etc will help. But in the end the music will only be as good as the sound card.

Most laptops are only going to be equipt with a average sound card. With a desktop you have the ability to upgrade to the best. With a laptop you are suck with what comes in the unit when you buy it.

For sound recording you will want a desktop so you can keep it current easier.
