Laptops & Notebooks - July 2006

[Selected]: All categories Computers & Internet Hardware Laptops & Notebooks

I'm looking for a good value notebook at a great price that would satisfy the following needs:
-it's for graduate study starting next fall
-thin and light (it will be carried around a lot)
-DVD RW
-80-100 gig hard drive space
-USB capability
-1 gig of RAM
-6 card reader
-good multimedia capabilities (this computer may be used for desktop publishing and higher end graphic editing)
-wireless internet access built in
-reliable brand
-at least a 15" screen
-Microsoft Office 2003 or higher
-under $1000-$1500 as much as possible (although the cheaper the better!)

Any suggestions?

Hi -- just within the last couple of weeks, when i'm playing a game on my computer, the graphics get draggy and jerky -- gives me a headache. They used to be smooth (like a movie). What causes this?

I checked with the games' manufacturers and they say "update direct X" which i did, and this didn't fix it.

I checked with my computer mfr and they were NO help whatsoever. I've also tried uninstalling and re-installing the games (Hobbit, Fame, & Narnia in particular, but also Escala solitare and the Windows solitare).

I have a Dell inspiron 9100 with XP, pentium 4 and lots of RAM.

Sometimes if i reboot several times, it will be okay for a while, but eventually starts jerking again.

thank you! any info and/or ideas are appreciated.

I want to use my laptop as my main computer, but still be able to access and use my desktop hard drive without needing another monitor and keyboard. Is it possible to direct link or network (not wireless) the desktop HD and the laptop together that will allow me full access to both computers drives?

I dont know what the deal is, but I can be in the middle of browsing the internet, playing online poker, or just writing something in MS Word and every once and a while my whole laptop will just shut itself off. Sometimes it will power right back on when I hit the power button, other times it will start to reboot, but then just turn off again.

I would really like to figure out what the heck is going on but Toshiba customer service is terrible & since my computer isn't covered under warranty anymore, they won't even help me without trying to charge me for it.

Has anyone else had this issue? Is there a quick fix? Any of you computer people have any ideas what the problem could be???

I have one friend who says he thinks it's because my processor is too slow, but that doesn't make sense to me because sometimes it will work & run just fine for hours and other times (Even if Im doing the exact same thing) it will only go 15-20 minutes and then turn itself off. Any ideas anyone?

I'm thinking about getting an apple Macbook and I was wondering if it's a good buy. I have never owned an apple before, but I'm looking for something more powerful than most PC's on the market. If you could give me some reviews I would appreciate it! Thanks

My 13 and 12 year old boys want a gaming computer that they can also do their homework on. They are bright kids-A+ students. I shopped and found it @ Costco for $999! It has an AMD Turion 64 x 2 Dual Core (1.6 mhz) processor with 1GB RAM, a 100 GB HardDrive, Dual Layer DVD Burner, & MSFT XD Media Center. It looks pretty good. They play games, but we strictly monitor which ones, and they have limited internet access that we also watch closely. They are not allowed to take the notebook into their rooms in wireless mode, but we want to have wireless connectivity. Questions: I have been told this is Vista ready. Is this processor enough for them for another 2-3 years? Is it expandable in RAM-and if so, to how much max? Can I do it myself? How is the processor & screen quality? Is the Turion a Dog? Does anyone know of a better value for $1000 or less? I am fine with a desktop-the notebook is a bonus. My 2nd choice: HP A1520 desktop w/o a screen: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ w/Dual Core for $649
????

I spilled a lot of water on the keyboard of my laptop. Almost instantly the screen went out. Then I turned off the power and wipee excess water and let it dry. Now, when I push the power button, the light comes on and I hear the fan start, but then that's it.
Any suggestions? Is it a complete loss? Or is it possibly fixable by me? Cheaper to fix or buy new laptop? I bought a warranty for it, but it specifically states will not cover spilled liquids. Thanks
