You can use any of them, but some laptops do have place for a regular pin type connector. My Dell Inspiron 2600 laptop will only print on a USB port and my Dell desktop will only print with the pin type connector. I don't understand this because I am using the same Dell printer on both. Both computers even have Windows XP.
If you cannot get your laptop to print, make sure you install the cd that came with the printer. I could not find the cd and tried to use downloads available through Dell, but I had no success. It seems that only the cd will work.

Choose the port that is the most comfortable for yourself. Just remember what port you choose the last time or else the PC will find it as a second printer(windows is strange like that, it remembers that a device was connected to a certain port and it wants that device to connect to the same port always, if you connect it to another port it will think it's a different device)

I agree, it should not matter which USB port you use.
You may need to add a driver, especially if you are running some older operating system, or if you have an old printer.
