I spilled a lot of water on the keyboard of my laptop. Almost instantly the screen went out. Then I turned off the power and wipee excess water and let it dry. Now, when I push the power button, the light comes on and I hear the fan start, but then that's it.
Any suggestions? Is it a complete loss? Or is it possibly fixable by me? Cheaper to fix or buy new laptop? I bought a warranty for it, but it specifically states will not cover spilled liquids. Thanks

Oooo, that's not good. If nothing else helps (Geek Squad, etc.) then try opening up the casing of the computer. Remove some parts of the inside of the computer to help air get into it. Use a hair dryer (or just time) to allow water trapped inside the computer casing to evaporate. DO THIS ONLY AS A LAST RESORT! It will most likely void your warranty, and you may not be able to put it back together. Other than that, you're at a total loss. Replacing all the parts probably damaged by the water would cost more than the laptop itself.

Having worked for a large professional services firm I've seen this happen first hand by colleagues. I can say with relative certainty that your machine is now nothing more than a doorstop. If you are so inclined you can take it to an authorized service center based on whatever brand it is, but I would recommend against those folks from Best Buy. Not that their bad, but I feel that this is over their heads and may cost you more time than money. Also, at a service center they may be able to replace the mother board or the shell and stick you existing hard drive back in for less than the price of a new system and if it is toast, then they should advise you of such and charge you for nothing more than the time they spent diagnosing the PC. Check with them first before signing anything and handing over your system. Better luck next time.

I repaired a laptop that had the same problem. I ended up buying a used motherboard off of ebay and installing it. It cost around 200 dollars for the part and if you dont count the shipping time it took around 2 hours to fix. If you can repair a desktop computer you can repair a laptop. You just need a smaller screwdriver.

Try letting it dry out for about 5-6 days, before you power it up, and then see if she still works! Having the thing powered up when the H2O hit it is probably not too good though!

I suggest you wait a few days. I'm sure it'll dry out and possibly work. I once forgot to take my Casio digital camera out of my pocket, and in the wash it went. It didn';t work so I bought a new one and a few days later, the older one started working. And it worked fine.

I am not saying you'll have the same results..but why not give it a try.

since you spilled water on your labtop your motherboard will have to be replaced and many other things, you are better off to go get a new one, much much much cheaper
