If you think you need one to stop the laptop from overheating then think again.
While it can get hot to the point it burns your skin (hence the reason they call them notebooks now and not laptops) its perfectly fine for the computer.
The components are capable of handling heat upto and beyond 80degrees C. Remember, its a computer not a person, while this is hot to you and me to a computer its just another day at the office.
If the laptop is burning your skin just put a cusion or a paper behind it to protect you. In terms of protecting the laptop dont worry.
The laptop coolers will have you believe that cooling will keep the laptop running longer and faster but in truth its just marketing. Sure cooling will proberbly give the laptop a 20 year life span instead of 15 but in truth no laptop ever gets to that age before something else fails or it gets lost, stolen, damaged.
