Try using Hamachi.

Download Hamachi, Install it BUT disable the checkbox which says something about Microsoft Vurnable thing, Make your whole harddisk shareable, Make a network on 1 computer, make the other join, go to the laptop, right click on your pc in Hamachi, then click browse

If your using ZoneAlarm be sure to put Hamachi in the trusted Zone

If the desktop computer is functioning, this can be done by connecting the computers with a ethernet switch and two LAN cables and making the hard drive shared.

If you're trying to access a desktop hard drive directly from the laptop, I'm afraid your stuck. You can access it through another desktop but not though a laptop.

Once you have set up a network (just plug in the cable it should do it automatically, ifnot set up a small home local area network LAN - in the box on the right of my nework places)

Then go to your pc and right click on start and click on explore then right click on c: and click on sharing and security. Click on that you understand the dangers etc. (remember to reset this after you are finished) Then click share this file on the network. If you need to change documents on the pc click allow other people to change files *(something like that - you will see it) Then go to your firewall setting and switch them off. Both hd's should be able to see each other.
Play arround with this if it does not work.
DON"T do this while connected to the internet you wll open your pc and laptop to everyone.
Remember to reset the original settings when you are done, unless it is only you that will be using the computers - say at home.
Good luck.

it`s easy ! All you need to do is to buy 3.5 inch Hard disk external enclosure with USB 2.0 Interface. Once you have it and you fit your Hard disk inside the enclosure, connect it to your laptop & then you should browse the Hard disk as an extrenal memory unit
