When air traffic control in LA bogged down, it was due to "computer glitch" which not only disrupted operation but placed public safety at risk. Similar problems happen in banking, and commerce, and even government. The vulnerability of computers is such that when they malfunction, everything else go haywire. When I was in the Navy, we had fifteen different ways that we could stir the ship just in case we lose primary steering. Can't the industry install "standby" systems so that disruptions can be minimized during a main computer malfunction?

Im downloading 27 films but they come as 1 download, the total size is 22.38 gig. The estimated time is about 9 days, averaging about 30kb/s. Will my PC overheat or is it ok to have it on for this long. Also, if i switched it off for a while then turned it back on would the download continue from where it had got to (13% at present time), or would it be lost.

Is this computer alright for a student?

I have a dell dimension 4700. Its has 512 mb of Ram and 80 gb of hd. It's a pretty fast computer but its getting old. It's also a windows xp media center edition 2005 but it's my mom's. I want my own pc but don't want a expensive 1. I'm only going to use it for watching and burning music and videos. Pus surf the web with a wireless router.

Here is the link of the computer for the new computer http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d...

Any opinion is helpful.

Also if anyone could tell me if I need a wireless card or I just hook it up to a phone line with a router.

If the computer I'm using now is connected to Internet using a ethernet cord directly to the phone line. Can I like plug the router in to the new computer then another phone line. P.S. I use speedstream 100 mbps not dialup.

This is a dv5000 series HP laptop and I'm selling it after using for a year and so. I want to DELETE everything for good as I don't want the person I'm selling it will try to recover data. I'm concerned to use the "seagate zero fill" utility as I'm afraid it'll delete something useful for my laptop to be recognized by the restore cd, because I've experienced similar problems in the past. What should I do to simply recover my actual and old (already deleted by windows) data in a safe way? I have to do it this night. Thank you very much for any useful information you'll provide me.

Have an old pentium (2 or 3?) with 256 meg RAM and Windows XP home edition. I want to use this computer for experimentation of installing Linux OS on it. 2 partitions that exists, the largest is used for Windowz (! obviously). I want the floppy to contain the partitioning program as well. My plan is to format my C: drive (? not sure if Linux recognizes my peripherals and has drivers for them?). Am I on the right path? I am depending on finding the required drivers on the net while installing Linux. Have highspeed internet.

I ordered my Compontnets, and they came earlier today, and have nearly finished building my pc.

Though i have one problem.

This is what it says in my motherboard manual:

1.6.1 ATX power connectors:

ATXPWR1 : ATX 24-pin - DONE that bit

ATX12V 8pin Power connector

This one supplies power to the CPU. The system will not start without connecting power to this one.

Thats the one im stuck on, its an 8-pin (2rows 4across)

And it gives the impression i need to plug a power supply cable to this socket, but i appear not to have any 8pin leads off my PSU.

Im using a Coolermaster eXtreme 500w PSU and an Abit AN52 mobo. (AMD)

Do i need an 8pin connector or could i use two 4pins possibly.?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but im abit of a nub at this stuff so any help is apprechiated.

Hi.
I recently formatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP Home Edition.
I have found site to download drivers specific for my computer, however there seems to be a problem with my sound.
The tune that plays when you log on plays fine, but that is the only sound my computer plays. I have checked all the volume and speaker settings, reinstalled the drivers and nothing works!
CD's, MP3's, songs on MySpace and other sites such as YouTube don't function correctly.
So please, is there any way I can get my sound back??
I am a person who can't live without his YouTube and music!!
Thanks.
Alex.

everyone in my faimly uses a laptop, but, we all share one printer. we have a desk (used to house our old pc ((omg my mp3 had more memory)) ) which is where the printer and other pheripherals are housed, which are all connected to a hub, which itself has one output cable. this usualy provides no problem. however, if someone is using the hub ( but not the printer) it then provides a problem when another wants to use the printer, as they cant do it without disconnecting person A's other peripherals. so my question is: is there a usb splitter that would split the output cable of the hub, so that more than one person could be connected to the hub at once?
any help would be great, thanks.

I can hear it spinning. It hook up the usb cord to my computer and i turn it on, i have 4 different usb places to plug a usb cord into. I tried all four and it still doesnt work. I know theres nothing wrong with the places to plug the usb cord in, but im not sure why its not working.

I plug it into every place and it doesnt work.
I can hear the spinning inside of the external hardrive.
