Is this computer alright for a student?

I have a dell dimension 4700. Its has 512 mb of Ram and 80 gb of hd. It's a pretty fast computer but its getting old. It's also a windows xp media center edition 2005 but it's my mom's. I want my own pc but don't want a expensive 1. I'm only going to use it for watching and burning music and videos. Pus surf the web with a wireless router.

Here is the link of the computer for the new computer http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d...

Any opinion is helpful.

Also if anyone could tell me if I need a wireless card or I just hook it up to a phone line with a router.

If the computer I'm using now is connected to Internet using a ethernet cord directly to the phone line. Can I like plug the router in to the new computer then another phone line. P.S. I use speedstream 100 mbps not dialup.

To the idiot "Computer Guy". Speedstream is DSL and DSL runs over the phone line. If you're going to answer peoples questions know what you're talking about! "Computer Repairman" my a...

As long as you're not into heavy duty gaming your choice will work fine. You will need a wireless card for your computer and , if your DSL modem isn't wireless you'll need to get a wireless router like this:

You would run a ethernet cord from the DSL modem to the WAN port of the router, run an ethernet cord from your moms puter to an ethernet LAN port on router them run your tig wireless.

As far as your moms computer goes its a decent rig but it isn't anything spectacular but for what you want to do with it it should work just fine. The Compaq you are looking at is an OK rig too but if your going to go with Windows Vista you really are going to want at least 2 gigs of RAM being that it is a Vista basic rig 1 gig may do just fine just keep in mind when you buy from Wal Mart you get what you pay for as far as Computers go. You will also need a Wireless card for either computer.

Acer makes good laptop PC's at low costs (at Walmart), you can also checkout geeks.com as they have good prices and systems, parts and notebooks as well. Even Ebay is a good place to shop, I got a 2.4ghz P4 tower for only $80. All I added was more RAM (already had a monitor).

Your moms old machine would be OK, I would just upgrade the RAM. an 80gig hard drive would be fine if you want to save some music and your documents/projects. Also, take off WIndows Media Center edition, its junk.

The link is truncated by YA, it is no better now.

If your Mom's computer is attached by a wire to a phone jack, then she is using dialup. See our previous answers.
